Fort Stewart host Meet Your Directorate event

Fort Stewart employees visited its Recycling Center Oct. 7 during a Meet Your Directorate event. This is the second event of its kind put on by the Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield U.S. Army Garrison Workforce Development Office.

“We found that a lot of civilians who have been working with Fort Stewart have been in the same directorate or agency, and the intent is trying to get them out to see what actually happens within the garrison outside of their working area,” said Adam Harris, Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield Workforce Development specialist. “That way they have better familiarization with what’s going on in the garrison and what it means as far as installation support.”

The Directorate of Public Works Environmental Branch was highlighted this quarter. DPW Environmental has three components: Prevention and Compliance, Forestry, and Fish & Wildlife.

The recycling program, which falls under prevention and compliance, started in 2004 through a directive from U.S. Army Installation Management Command. Last year, over 23,500 tons were diverted from the landfill.

“Diversion rate is what we don’t put in our landfill,” said Nolan Fields, environmental protection specialist. “That means our landfill has increased space time for 11 years, so it doesn’t close until 2045.”

The small but mighty team clears over 750 dumpsters spilt between Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield every week. Currently, the recycling plant processes plastic, metal cans, aluminum, glass and cardboard. They cannot accept scrap metal as it is an entirely different process.

Fields wishes more people knew tires and furniture cannot be processed or disposed of in the installation’s landfill because it does not meet the necessary standards. Those items must be taken off post.

One participant asked if they accept off post recycling from their home and the answer is yes.

“If you ever recycle materials off the installation, please bring them and put them in any blue dumpster,” Fields said.

Fort Stewart doesn’t have a designated drop-off center due to illicit dumping in the past, but Hunter Army Airfield has a convenient drop-off location by the main post exchange.
