Bruin Waste & Recycling Facility in Austin Expands Operating Days and Hours to Improve Free Community Recycling Access

DELTA COUNTY, Colo. (August 11, 2026) — In a continued effort to increase local waste diversion, preserve landfill capacity, and improve recycling access for residents, hours have officially been expanded at the Bruin Waste / Double J Recycling Center, located at 21538 Austin Road in Austin.

Through a partnership with Delta County, the facility has added all-day Monday operations and extended closing times to 6 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays, giving residents more opportunities to use the County-supported recycling program.

A significant amount of material entering the Adobe Buttes Landfill each year could potentially be diverted through recycling, composting, and other waste-reduction efforts. The expanded schedule is intended to reduce previous barriers to access and make free residential drop-off recycling more convenient for working families.

Delta County offsets the cost of the recycling program, allowing Delta County residents to drop off accepted household recyclables at the Austin facility free of charge. Some specialty materials and services may be subject to fees or may not be accepted.

The expanded hours now in effect at the Austin facility are:

Day           |                           Hours

Monday                            8 a.m.–6 p.m.

Tuesday                           8 a.m.–4 p.m.

Wednesday                     8 a.m.–4 p.m.

Thursday                         8 a.m.–4 p.m.

Friday                               8 a.m.–6 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday     Closed

The new schedule adds Monday service, opens the facility one hour earlier Tuesday through Friday, and extends Friday service until 6 p.m.

Accepted materials at the Bruin Waste / Double J Recycling Center in Austin include common household recyclables such as No. 1 and No. 2 plastic containers, paper, paperboard such as cereal boxes, corrugated cardboard, tin and aluminum cans, and glass.

All recyclable materials must be clean and dry. Please rinse recyclable containers before dropping them off. Dirty or contaminated materials are not accepted.

Because accepted materials and preparation requirements can vary, residents are encouraged to call Bruin Waste at 970-835-8886 or visit the Bruin Waste website before bringing materials to the facility.

Residents are also encouraged to call ahead to confirm the facility is open, as short-staffed days may result in same-day closures.

“Expanding a landfill is a major taxpayer expense, and the best way to delay that cost is to reduce what we throw away,” said Lindsay Mitchell, Delta County Public Information Officer.

“Recycling is one of the most practical tools residents have to help preserve the landfill space we already have. We’re thrilled that, working with Bruin management, the County was able to help achieve these expanded hours, which will give working families more opportunity to use the free recycling center and help reduce the long-term impact of waste management on our community and our wallets.”

Paid Electronic Waste Drop-Off

Electronic waste is accepted at the Bruin Waste / Double J Recycling Center in Austin only and is subject to a fee of $0.65 per pound.

Accepted electronic devices include many televisions and monitors, desktop and laptop computers, printers and scanners, cell phones and tablets, video game consoles, network equipment, DVD and VCR players, digital cameras, hard drives, electronic cables, and power cords.

Certain appliances, batteries, hazardous materials, solar equipment, smoke detectors and other electronic or battery-powered products are not accepted. Residents should review the complete list of acceptable items or call Bruin Waste before bringing electronic waste to the facility.

Additional Free Recycling Drop-Off Locations

Limited-material recycling containers are also available at several locations throughout Delta County. Paperboard, including items such as cereal boxes, may be placed in the designated paper collection containers at these locations.

Cedaredge: Paper, paperboard, and corrugated cardboard at the Cedaredge Public Works building.

Hotchkiss: Paper, paperboard, and corrugated cardboard in the Farm Runners parking lot.

Delta: Paper and paperboard at Fourth Street and Meeker Street, and clean, brown corrugated cardboard in the fenced area west of the City of Delta Public Works building, 640 W. Fourth St.

All materials must be clean and dry. Dirty, wet or contaminated materials are not accepted. Residents should follow the instructions posted at each location, as the materials accepted at satellite sites are more limited than at the Austin Recycling Center.

Paid Curbside Recycling Now Available

For residents seeking the convenience of home pickup, Bruin Waste / Double J Recycling also offers paid curbside recycling within the town limits of Cedaredge, Delta, and Hotchkiss.

Unlike the County’s free drop-off recycling locations, curbside recycling is a paid residential pickup option. Curbside recycling is available for $13.50 per month for current Bruin Waste customers and $21 per month for non-customers.

Pickup takes place every other Wednesday, and residents should place accepted recyclables at the curb by 6 a.m.

The curbside service offers single-stream recycling. Accepted curbside items include:

  • No. 1 and No. 2 plastic containers
  • Paper and paperboard, including cereal boxes
  • Corrugated cardboard
  • Tin cans
  • Aluminum cans
  • Glass bottles and jars

Because the service is single-stream, accepted recyclable materials may be placed together in the recycling container.

All recyclable materials must be clean and dry. Please rinse containers before placing them at the curb. Dirty or contaminated materials will not be collected.

Residents outside the current curbside service area may contact Bruin Waste to be added to its recycling interest list as routes expand.

Residents interested in signing up for paid curbside service, learning more about pickup schedules, purchasing bins, confirming accepted materials, or using free drop-off recycling can call 970-835-8886 or visit www.DeltaCountyCO.gov/1309/Curbside-Recycling-Service
