ATLANTA, GEORGIA, TORONTO, ONTARIO, July 19, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — Safety-related and fire incidents involving hoverboards, cellphones, headphones and laptops are making the headlines. Many of these incidents are being traced to batteries, further intensifying safety concerns.

To address similar concerns presented by collecting used batteries for recycling, Call2Recycle®, Inc., North America’s first and largest consumer battery stewardship and recycling organization, has launched the Charge Up Safety campaign.

The objective is to raise the awareness of safe collection and shipping practices among those involved in the collection and shipment process, including consumers, municipalities, retailers, sorters, processors and Call2Recycle employees. Call2Recycle collects and recycles single-use and rechargeable batteries under 11 lbs. (5 kgs) and has diverted approximately 130 million lbs. (59 million kgs) from landfills during the past 21 years.

“Our #1 objective as an organization is the SAFE collection and recycling of batteries,” said Carl Smith, CEO and president, Call2Recycle, Inc. “We are launching Charge Up Safety to ensure that the importance of safety isn’t forgotten in our commitment to sustain the environment.”

Call2Recycle has launched a new safety portal, a one-stop hub of safety information on how to safely recycle and ship batteries. Collection site employees and consumers will be able to take an online training module that tests their battery handling knowledge. Instructions for handling damaged, defective and recalled batteries are also featured. Additional safety policies for collection sites, sorters and processors are being implemented. Organizations that do not follow the policies may be suspended or terminated from the program.

“As the volume and types of batteries in the marketplace expand, so do the risks for an incident,” said Smith. “Rechargeable batteries can hold a residual charge, and when they come into contact with another metal they can cause a spark, which can escalate into a fire or explosion. At the highest risk are the lithium ion rechargeable batteries found in many of today’s portable devices such as cellphones, laptops, tablets and power tools.”

“Preventing accidents can be as simple as educating people to take the time to simply bag or tape each battery prior to dropping it off in the recycling box or before a box is shipped,” said Smith. “Charge Up Safety is about continually assessing and enhancing our safety and compliance practices to ensure new safety policies are being embraced across our collection and recycling network.”

ATLANTA, GEORGIA, TORONTO, ONTARIO, July 19, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — Les incidents de sécurité et les incendies mettant en cause les planches gyroscopiques (hoverboards), les téléphones cellulaires, les casques d’écoute et les ordinateurs portables font les manchettes. Des piles et des batteries sont à l’origine de plusieurs de ces événements, ce qui accentue encore plus les préoccupations en matière de sécurité.

En réponse aux risques que pose la collecte de piles et de batteries usées en vue de leur recyclage, Appel à RecyclerMD Inc., le premier et plus important organisme officiel de gestion des piles et batteries à usage domestique d’Amérique du Nord, a lancé la campagne Pensons sécurité.

Cette campagne vise à hausser la notoriété des pratiques de collecte sécuritaires auprès des intervenants du processus de collecte et d’expédition, entre autres, les consommateurs, les municipalités, les détaillants, les trieurs, les transformateurs et les employés d’Appel à Recycler. Cette dernière recueille et recycle les piles et les batteries jetables et rechargeables d’au plus 5 kg (11 lb). Elle en a détourné environ 59 millions de kilos (130 millions de livres) des sites d’enfouissement au cours des 21 dernières années.

« L’objectif le plus important de notre organisation consiste à recueillir et à recycler les piles et les batteries de façon SÉCURITAIRE», explique le président et chef de la direction d’Appel à Recycler Inc., Carl Smith. « La campagne Pensons sécurité nous aidera à rappeler la mesure dans laquelle la sécurité est importante pour soutenir notre engagement à l’égard de l’environnement. »

L’entreprise a également mis en ligne un nouveau portail sur la sécurité, où une foule de renseignements sur les méthodes de recyclage et d’expédition sécuritaires des piles et des batteries sont centralisés. Les employés des points de dépôt et les consommateurs pourront aussi suivre un module de formation qui leur permettra de mettre à l’épreuve leurs connaissances en la matière. Le portail comporte également des directives de gestion des piles et batteries endommagées, défectueuses et ayant fait l’objet d’un rappel. Appel à Recycler a, par ailleurs, mis en œuvre de nouvelles politiques de sécurité pour les points de dépôt, ainsi que les centres de tri et de transformation. Les organisations qui ne se conformeront pas à ces politiques risquent de voir leur participation au programme suspendue ou révoquée.

« Plus le volume et les types de piles et batteries sur le marché augmentent, plus il y a de risques que des incidents surviennent, souligne M. Smith. Comme les piles et les batteries rechargeables peuvent maintenir une charge résiduelle, elles sont susceptibles de provoquer des étincelles, et donc d’engendrer un incendie ou une explosion, si elles entrent en contact avec une autre surface métallique. Ce sont les piles et blocs-piles au lithium ion, que l’on trouve dans plusieurs des appareils portatifs modernes, notamment les téléphones cellulaires, les ordinateurs portables, les tablettes informatiques et les outils électriques, qui posent le plus grand risque.

Mais il est facile de prévenir les accidents. Il suffit d’insister pour que chacun prenne simplement le temps d’ensacher ou d’enrubanner chaque pile ou batterie avant de la déposer dans la boîte de recyclage ou avant l’expédition d’une boîte, poursuit-il. La campagne Pensons sécurité a été mise sur pied pour nous permettre de sans cesse évaluer et améliorer nos pratiques en matière de sécurité et de conformité, afin de faire en sorte que celles-ci soient adoptées et respectées à l’échelle de nos points de dépôt et de notre réseau de recyclage. »
